Volunteering brings you together with other people

Volunteering in your community is an important – and often fun – way to meet new people, especially if you feel lonely or isolated or just want to make more friends. In fact, one of the best ways to meet new people and strengthen relationships with people you already know is to do something together. Volunteering is a great way to do both.

Volunteering boosts your sense of self-worth and self-confidence.

Doing good for other people and the community makes you feel good about yourself. Working as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and self-identity. It can also help boost your self-confidence by taking you out of your normal environment and comfort zone.

Volunteering does make you feel better about yourself, which you can then bring back to your "normal" life, hopefully giving you a more positive outlook on your own life and goals for the future.

Volunteering is good for your body because...

Volunteering has interesting health benefits that can improve both your mental and, perhaps more surprisingly, your physical health. In fact, there is more and more evidence that people whose time they give to others might have lower blood pressure and live longer.

A 1999 study found that "high volunteers," or people who helped at two or more organisations, died 63% less often than people who didn't volunteer.

Carnegie Mellon University did more research in 2013 and found that adults over 50 who volunteered regularly were less likely to get high blood pressure than people who didn't volunteer. Hypertension is a key sign of health because it can lead to stroke, heart disease, and death before its time.
